Top Makeup Tips: How to Put on Concealer

The power of makeup is unquestionable. It can transform your skin, enhance your features, and give you an extra boost of confidence in your appearance. The best makeup routines are easy to follow and leave you feeling like you are ready to take on the world.

When it comes to different products, the right application can make all the difference. If you're using your makeup incorrectly, you're not getting the most out of your products.

The first thing you have to nail in your makeup application game is your base: foundation and concealer. If your base is wrong, everything else will look wrong.

We're going to focus on concealers specifically right now. They come in a myriad of shades, formulations, consistencies, and finishes.

Here are a few concealer tips and tricks for you to follow to ensure your concealer looks perfect regardless of any imperfections.

Concealer Shades For Every Need

The first thing to go over when talking about concealers is the shade and undertone you need. You may want several different shades. We'll go over how you can use them. However, it is essential to know what undertone your skin has.

Undertones are the natural colors underneath the surface of your skin. There are three primary undertones, cool, warm, and neutral. No matter if you have a tan or not, your skin's undertone won't change and can often make or break a makeup look.

Warm:

This can be a golden, yellow, or peachy undertone.

Cool:

Cool can be bluish undertones, but it also includes pink and red.

Neutral:

If you have both warm and cool undertones, you are neutral.

While your undertone won't change, the shade you are drastically differs depending on how much sun you're getting or not getting. You can use several different concealer shades in the same makeup look.

Light:

A shade or two lighter than your skin color is ideal for highlighting and brightening your face. We often see a lighter shade used under the eyes and in the t-zone for this reason.

You don't want to look too light, though! Be careful using it in other areas of your face because it can make you look washed out.

Your Match:

For blemishes, discoloration, or other imperfections, reach for a shade that is an exact match to your foundation.

A perfect match will allow you to blend your concealer out without a lot of effort. If you use your highlighter shade or a darker shade for spot concealing, you may end up drawing attention to the area you are trying to conceal.

Dark:

A darker shade helps contour your face. You will want to pick a shade one or two shades darker from your skin tone to achieve that sculpted look.

You can even try two darker shades if you want to step your look up even more. You use the darkest shade to define your bone structure and the lighter shade to create the shadow.

If you've never contoured before, start small and work on blending before going all out.

No matter what shade range you're looking for, HIDE makes it easy to match your foundation and concealer to your skin. We have a shade matcher that allows you to enter your current foundation, and we will tell you what shade in our collection will work best for you.

Apply Concealer For Flawless Looking Skin

Applying concealer to give you a flawless finish isn't as challenging as it may seem. You also don't need a different formulation for different areas of your face. You can use the same kind of concealer for every imperfection.

HIDE Premium Concealer is a liquid concealer that is great for covering your under eyes, blemishes, and other flaws you want to make disappear. It's a water-based, weightless formula that can do it all, and with these simple steps, you'll have a smooth complexion in no time.

Step 1:

Prime your skin by washing your face and applying moisturizer. You can also add a primer based on your needs, a mattifying, illuminating, or regular formulation to make your makeup last longer. However, if you're using HIDE products, you don't absolutely need a primer, but you definitely need a clean, hydrated base.

Step 2:

Next, apply your foundation evenly across your face. You can use a foundation brush or a damp makeup sponge to blend it out. You want to apply your foundation before your concealer to avoid looking cakey. You also can end up removing your concealer if you use it first.

Step 3:

After you apply your foundation, it's time for concealer! Start in the center of your face, drawing an inverted triangle under your eyes, with your lighter shade, instead of just using it directly under your lash line.

The triangle technique brightens the face instead of drawing attention to your under eyes. You can also add concealer to your T-zone. Blend the concealer out by gently dabbing it with a damp makeup sponge or tool of choice.

Try not to drag your concealer because this can take it off the area you need it on.

Step 4:

Apply your concealer that's your foundation shade on any blemishes or discoloration. Carefully pat the concealer into your skin over the area until it is no longer visible.

Step 5:

Contour your face by going in with your darker shades around your hairline, down your jawline, and on the upper sides of your nose. Blend out entirely with a damp makeup sponge. This stage is optional depending on what look you are going for.

Step 6:

Apply a translucent setting powder. If you feel like you need it, lightly brush it over your entire face to lock your makeup in place. You can also use a setting spray instead of powder.

Concealer Tips And Tricks

Besides all the uses for concealer we just went over, you can do even more things with concealer!

Here are a few extra tips and tricks.

1. Magic Eraser:

Oh, did you mess up your winged liner, lipstick, eyebrows? That's ok. We've all been there. You can take a little bit of concealer onto your damp makeup sponge and carefully cover any of those mistakes.

2. Prime Your Eyelids:

You don't need to buy an eyeshadow primer. Simply apply a lighter concealer shade to your eyelids to help hold your eyeshadow in place and prevent it from settling into your creases.

3. Combine Products:

You can combine other products with your concealer to create a brand new product. For example, mix it with face lotion to create a tinted moisturizer for a natural makeup look. You could also combine your liquid concealer with a highlighter for an extra brightening effect. Just remember, you don't want to incorporate an oil-based product with a water-based product because it will separate and look less than appealing on your skin. Oil and water don't mix.

Try Not To Use Too Much

It can be really easy to get carried away when applying concealer and makeup in general. However, too much of a good thing can be bad in this case.

You only want to use the amount it takes to conceal your imperfections. Otherwise, too much can leave you with a heavy, cakey appearance.

You also don't need to apply foundation underneath your eyes where you will use your concealer. Applying a foundation in this delicate area where you will also use concealer can add extra texture you don't need and cause caking.

Some concealers are more prone to cakiness than others. For example, cream concealers can quickly end up looking too heavy on the skin. You want to use a concealer that blends out beautifully, like HIDE Premium Concealer. Our concealer is a lightweight option that will give you a more natural-looking finish while providing high coverage.

Another tip to avoid looking like your makeup is too thick is to use a waterproof formulation. Since makeup typically begins to look cakey later in the day as it starts to settle into your fine lines or moves around. Using a waterproof concealer will ensure it stays locked in place and doesn't start to move around and look cakey.

In Summary

Concealer application can be an effortless process with a few simple steps.

Remember to prime and apply your foundation first. Then go in with your various concealer shades based on your needs. A light shade highlights, while a shade that's your perfect match is great for covering blemishes. And a darker concealer shade is your best friend when it comes to contouring.

HIDE Premium Concealers are an excellent option for any makeup look. Its weightless waterproof formula won't make you look cakey even after hours of wear.

Plus, our concealers come in many different shades and undertones so that you can find your perfect match for all areas of your face!
